The film is pretty old but creepy nonetheless.
It was called Chucky.
What struck me most - and hence made it creepy - was the resemblance between the doll (small, never stops talking, screws up its face to mutter things) and, well, make up your own mind...
There's also the alleged link to the murder of three year old Jamie Bulger...
Maybe I should be more careful as to how I talk to people...you never know what sharp objects they may carry around their person...
