Homework - Economics

Homework for Bibi, Aidana, Mary, David, Dima and Anastasia ONLY

You have NINE DAYS to write a REVISION BOOKLET that covers the entire AS Unit 1 syllabus for Economics. ALL of the booklet must be your own words. The diagrams must all be your own work (you can copy but NOT copy and paste) using this

(Unit 1 is NOT the whole OCR book. It is ONLY half of it. READ THE SYLLABUS)

You are to include links, where relevant, to websites, newspaper articles etc.

You MUST MUST cover the syllabus. Obviously if you wish to add in examples from Russia, Korea or Kazakstan then that is fine - as long as there are also examples from the UK.
There are SIX of you so I strongly suggest you split the syllabus for Unit 1 into FIVE sections and each of you are responsible for one section. The SIXTH person to act as overall Editor - perhaps someone who does not speak fluent Russian (and has a silly haircut)

I want to see a draft copy on FRIDAY.

If any of you do ICT then you must also design a cover.

There must be an INDEX to the book.

You must include at the END of every chapter, a MIND MAP summarising the chapter.

Each chapter MUST have a list of key vocabulary.

At the END of the book in the Appendix, there should be BOOK REVIEWS.

The manual should be in LANDSCAPE FORMAT

There must be TWO versions of this book.

One in ENGLISH...and one in Russian.

When you have finished I will tell you some news you will be pleased about...something that will make you proud, happy - ecstatic even....

Something that may change your life - it has changed the lives of other Economics students I have taught...

So what you should do over this week-end is P-L-A-N who is going to do what and by when.

Then allocate the work and arrange deadlines etc.

Then sit back and think of how you will tell your parents about this, your friends, your children...how the people at the top universities will admire you....

PLUS:

You are to create a series of Powerpoint slides that go with this - in Russian and English. These are then to be burned onto CD.

Also to learn Desktop Publishing

1. Scribus Desktop Publishing

ScribusScribus - Screenshot from scribus.net
This Open Source software is available for several platforms, including Windows. Scribus offers CMYK support, font embedding and sub-setting, PDF creation, EPS import/export, basic drawing tools, and other professional level features. It works in a fashion similar to Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress with text frames, floating palettes, and pull-down menus -- and without the hefty price tag. WebWorkerDaily recommends Scribus "for logos, booklets, brochures, or just very eye-popping pages."
Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, OS2

2. Serif PagePlus SE

Aimed at both novice and professional users, this Windows package combines ease-of-use and some professional options, such as advanced layout and typesetting, with word processing, and drawing. Current versions are not free but Serif gives away earlier editions to generate satisfied customers (who hopefully upgrade). Get free Serif drawing, image editing, and Web publishing software too. You get way more than you pay for with this option. There's Plenty of Praise for PagePlus SE even from those using the pro version. And if you like the free version, you'll love the latest (and inexpensive) version. Read this review of Serif PagePlus X3 Publisher Professional.

3. OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice.orgOpenOffice.org
Not just as good as, some say it's better than Microsoft Office. Get fully-integrated word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database tools in this Open Source software. Among the many features you'll find PDF and SWF (Flash) export, increased Microsoft Office format support, and multiple languages. If your desktop publishing needs are basic but you also want a full suite of office tools, try OpenOffice. For more complex desktop publishing tasks you might be better off with Scribus or PagePlus SE.

  1. So, I am editor write, so basically what we have to do is gather together maybe sometime next week and divide into 5 sections and then let them do that and what I should is check everything again? Right?
But where can we get this book?

  2. 1. You don't 'get a book' You WRITE THE BOOK.

    2. You already have TWO textbooks to check information plus the internet plus your...brain.

    3. You odn't meet next week. You DECIDE TODAY and START TODAY. (Mary has already started)

    4. YOU are responsible for double-checking everything.

    5. Then other people heck the translations etc.

You will be surprised what I will tell you in ten days if you have done a good job.

  4. Yes...and no.

All the words must be your own - so NO copying and NO pasting. Even the diagrams must be your own and NOT copied, in the sense you can have diagrams very similar to elsewhere but do not simply copy and paste

If you all do a good job on this then I will have a REALLY FANTASTIC SURPRISE for you.

You will be so proud....so pleased.....all of you!
